Stay a while, and listen!

Hello, and welcome! I make cohesive sets of audio for various digital media, bringing musical soundscapes together with voices and sound effects to create an emotionally resonant aural experience. I'm also excellent at stringing together industry jargon into seemingly meaningful sentences!

If you have a game, film, or other project that needs sound, odds are good that I can help. So feel free to tell me all about it at JWaiste (at) gmail.com

Music

During my years as a singer/songwriter, I had written a ton of songs that I was proud of, but I couldn't get anyone to listen to them. As it turns out, recording with a cheap gaming headset into Audacity isn't the best way to record… well, anything.

Today, I’ve learned the benefits not only of good microphones, but good mic placement, mixing, and and a host of digital audio effects that I can use to help prevent others from repeating my own horrible, horrible mistakes.

This band was so incredible to work with. Pity they had one of the least searchable names I’ve ever heard of. As far as I know, this is the last remnant of their existence, so enjoy it!

one of several political ads I’ve worked on with Ropeline Media. These are done at an extremely fast pace, as everything in politics is time-sensitive.

Was involved with a project to get the word out about how bad the Washington State tax system is (spoilers: its awful), but after the 2016 election, the project just kind of dissolved into our collective despair. Still, quality narration from local actress Sammy Sky Hope.

Its easy to think media like games and video as mostly visual experiences, but the truth is you can get away with some pretty terrible quality visuals so long as the sound is good. And the opposite is almost never true.

an audio recreation assignment from school that I had a lot of fun with, and brings no end of amusement to my friends and family. Yes, that’s my voice. I am so sorry.

An audio accompaniment to the children's book by Robin Robinson, featuring local actress Sammy Sky Hope.

This is my newest project, the first in a series of video essays I’m working on. I’ve never done any filming before, turns out its pretty tough! ;)

Part of the conceit here is to make what feels like a big production without spending any money. It was filmed on my phone using cheap mics and edited in free software, so I take a little more pride in the end result than I probably have any right to.

After years of working with bands and writing singer/songwriter stuff, I found myself struggling to find a style of music that suits me. Over time, I found myself thinking less like a songwriter and more like a composer. Nowadays, given free reign, I write whatever excites me. So, if you have an exciting project, I'd love to hear about it!

Just some jamming on guitar and piano. This is a nice representation of the music I make when I don’t have a specific project in mind.

This was an attempt at some generic video game music while I was learning to use Fmod’s adaptive audio functionality. There are 5 loops, and the idea is that the music flows from one loop to the next depending on what the player is doing.

A sample of a big orchestral piece I’ve been working on. I’m a little too in love with the song to try and finish it at my current skill level, but I’m getting better all the time :)
